Observation Definition • The action of process of observing something or someone carefully or in order to gain information. • Observations are very important parts of a Scientific Experiment. • The steps we took in the observations led us to are hypothesis that we said that the fish moves because it reacts to the heat and it bends. (Zebrasoma)

  3. Observations • Quantitative- observations observe of data in numbers: a certain amount of time. • 6 centimeters long • Mass 0.04 grams (Longfin Batfish) • Qualitative- observations observed of data in quality • Moves when touched • Reacts when heated • Water does nothing

Hypothesis • Dependent Variable- the event studied and expected to change when the independent variable is changed. -Our group’s dependent variable was how much the fish moved after heat was of coldness was applied. • Control Group- a group separated from the rest of the experiment where the independent variable being tested cannot influence the results -Our group’s control group was the fish being tested in room temperature on the desk. Hypothesis • Constant Variable- a variable that will never change in the experiment -Our constant’s in the experiment were the fish used, heat source, coldness source, and the desk used. • Independent Variable- the variable that is changed in a scientific experiment -Our independent variable was the temperature of the desk.   6. Hypothesis • Hypothesis- a proposition set forth as an explanation for the occurrence of some specified group of phenomena - Our group’s hypothesis was “If the temperature of the surface that the fish is laying on is warm then the fish will have more movement.” Photobucket

  8. Materials • Fish • Microwave heating patch • Ice pack • Paper towels • Timer • Thermometer • Scale • Desk • Ruler

  9. Step 1: Obtain all materials. Step 2: Mass and Measure the fortune fish. (Abby Popovic) (Abby Popovic)

  10. Step 3: Use a thermometer to measure the temperature of the room temperature desk. Record in the “room temp desk” column. Step 4: Place fortune fish on desk, and record movement if present. Step 5: describe and record movement of fish. (Abby Popovic)

  11. Step 6: place fish on stationary paper towel to return to a normal state. Step 7: let fish sit for one minute Step 8: place microwavable heat pad in microwave and heat up for 2 minutes. (Abby Popovic)

  12. Step 9: remove head pad from microwave and place on desk for 30 seconds. Step 10: remove the head pad. Measure the temperature of the desk. Wipe away any moisture given off by the pad. Step 11: place fish on the warmed desk and lit sit for 30 seconds. (Abby Popovic)

  13. Step 12: after 30 seconds, remove fish and let sit on stationary paper towel. Step 13: break the ice pack and shake to make cold. Place on different area of desk and leave for 30 seconds. Record temperature of desk.Remove ice pack, wipe away any moisture left behind and place fish on cold desk. Leave for 30 seconds. (Abby Popovic) (Abby Popovic)

  14. Step 14: describe and record any movement from the fish. Step 15: after 30 seconds, remove fish from cold desk and place on station paper towel. Step 16: repeat steps 3-15 for trail 2. (Abby Popovic)
