  2. The Quintum is a 3D, semi dome shaped, personal learning environment. Situated in a museum, It is designed to bring a life like, interactive learning experience to its patrons. The inside of the Quintum’s walls are screens that project information: for use of this report we will use dinosaurs. • The idea for this product came from a class workshop, where we designed a museum piece for a deaf child. • The main participants for the Quintum are children in general. • The idea is to inform and entertain in a new and innovative medium. • The Quintum turns learning into a game.

  5. THE MECHANICS • The internal 3D screens are layered to the inside walls of the Quintum. • 250 Infrared sensors crisscross the internal space of the Quintum and map all movements made within. The beams coordinate every movement you make and send that information to the computer. • The internal screens project an augmented reality with three images providing separate options. • The participant – wearing 3D glasses - is enticed to reach out to a specific option that they would like to partake in. • The sensors pick up the movement and the internal computer recognises which area of the screen the participant is interacting with. • The participant interacts and leads the information that is displayed on the screen. • Every user experience is different. The IR sensors and intelligent screens create a unique experience. • The exterior shell has a sliding door to allow a student (whatever the age) entry. Once inside the darkened room, the guest is gestured to the centre by floor lighting. • SAFETY ISSUE – planned to have a moving floor but a safety report has to completed.

THE TEST • Rashid is at the museum on a school excursion. • He likes to play and interact with the exhibitions. • He enters the Quintum and motions towards the skeleton. • He starts to pull it apart and changes the structure of the skeleton. (whilst doing so he is learning about the anatomy of the Dinosaur) • He pulls all the bones away from each other and can’t get them back together, so he gives up and goes back to the home screen. • He has to complete an assignment so has a quick look at the evolution tables.

  8. He then chooses the dinosaur in the wild and watches it run about. (he is learning about the habitat and diet of the dinosaur). He can slow the dinosaur, stop the dinosaur, make it go faster. He can control it and make it eat smaller animals. The program lets the participant decide what the interaction will be. • Rashid is reaching his 10 minute time limit and still has to complete the answers for his school assignment. He goes back to the home screen then goes to the ‘Evolution of Dinosaurs’ page and does his research.

  9. Robert is at the museum to see the new ancient Egypt exhibition. • As he is wandering around the museum he notices the Quintum. He decides to enter the exhibition as he has always had a fascination with dinosaurs. • Robert is a bit hesitant about entering the dark room, but sees the blue light on the floor and is happily guided into the centre of the room. • He enjoys interacting with the screens but doesn’t understand how it works and doesn’t really trust it. • He’s happy he experienced the Quintum, but probably wont try it again.

  10. “I loved it when the T-Rex chewed up the pterodactyl.” “I want to come back and have another go.” “Yes I though it was very clever. I liked how close you felt to the dinosaurs. I’ve never experienced anything like it.”

  11. Outcomes - Rashid • Rashid interacted seamlessly with the idea. He was excited by the interaction and wasn’t fazed by the new technology. • His 10 minutes was quickly devoured and he retained a lot of information from the experience.

  12. Outcomes - Robert • Robert was dubious about walking in to a dark room filled with latest technology. It could possibly be light when you walk in and the lighting dims as the exhibition starts. • He enjoyed the experience and liked the feeling of closeness with the dinosaurs. • His movements succeeded with the technology and he was able to work through the simple operation.
