  1. 3rd Winchester Battlefield Guide Combining Place-Based Learning with Technology

  2. Abstract • The 3rd Winchester Battlefield Guide is a tool created to guide a class through a battlefield with prepared educational materials. • The Battlefield Guide provides audio, video, images, and text providing experiential learning in a historical location. • The Battlefield Guide provides immediate access to a wealth of primary sources, secondary sources, and instructional resources. • Place-based learning has proven to be an effective teaching tool especially for non-traditional learners. The addition of technology, which has also proven to be an effective tool will add to the multi-sensory experience. • Students who might not normally take an interest in history may be inspired to learn more through the personal experience of being in the place and the multi-sensory experience provided by the Battlefield Guide.

  3. Goals • My overall goal as an educator is to inspire life-long learning. By providing a multi-sensory, immersive experience I believe that more individuals will become interested in whatever they are studying. By involving personal stories, music, and the actual location a personal/emotional experience is developed, which leads to a further interest in the topic. • The student/visitor will have an overall understanding of the battle in general (where, when, & who). • The student/visitor will understand the emotions and personal struggles of soldiers and civilians involved in the battle. • The student/visitor will learn how various sources are used to ask historical questions and do research. • The student/visitor will visit other battlefields, take action in battlefield preservation efforts, continue historical research.

  4. Why does it matter? • History is quickly being left behind in U.S. schools. History tests are not nearly as prevalent at reading and math tests so school districts are putting history on the back burner. • History needs to be seen as something of value. If students take an interest, teachers will too. While history is still being taught in school and while fieldtrips are still being taken we need to get students interested. • History teaches critical thinking skills, reading, writing, and civic responsibility. This tool will show teachers how all of those skills can be covered and taught in one topic.

  11. Technology Used • I will use Google Android to build an application that can be used on any mobile device. • “An introduction to Android Open Source Project. Android is the first free, open source, and fully customizable mobile platform.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Y4thikv-OM • Currently the T Mobile G1 is the only device that Android can be used on, but this should be changing within a year or so. • I will be asking for a class set of G1’s (40) in the grant application. I do not expect all students and teachers to come with their own mobile devices to run the program. • Because of the capability to have Android run on any mobile device, the 3rd Winchester Tour Guide will be available for anyone who visits.
