  3. Create five sentences of your own using apostrophes. • Show a contraction • Show one person owning something • Show more than one person owning something.

  4. Ms. Deere’s Examples: • The students’ papers were lost in all of Ms. Deere’s supplies. • I can’t remember where I placed my hair brush. • Tommy’s lunch break begins in thirty minutes. • About the time she remembered to take out the trash, her cousin’s Labrador came running up and ripped open the bag all over the kitchen floor. • The dog wouldn’t listen to its owner when she yelled, "Stop!”

  5. Example 2 : As she walked in the store, she remembered : eggs,bread,lettuce,bacon,milk, and orange juice.

  7. Create three sentences of your own using a colon. • Ms. Deere’s example: My favorite aspects of fall: the leaves blowing through the air, the crisp breeze in the morning, the smell of bonfires and candy corn, and the thought of hayrides.

  9. Create five sentences using exclamation points . • Ms. Deere’s example: “Hold on, whatever you do, don’t let go of that rope!”

  10. Ms. Deere’s example: “Hey girl!” “Hey girl!” The young man yelled as he stood at Ms. Deere’s door looking at the young lady walking down the hall.

  12. A semicolon acts just like a period (.) in a sentence. • Ms. Deere had a blast during her fall break; she had so much fun that she didn’t want to come back to school. • The above sentence could be split into two sentences.

  13. Create five sentences using semicolons. Remember, you must have two independent clauses(complete sentences on either side of a semicolon. Start with these sentences. Combine these two sentences using a semicolon. Jennifer went to Gulf Shores over fall break. She became sick after eating raw oysters at the Pink Pony mini bar.

  14. Can you combine these two sentences without using a semicolon? Jennifer went to Gulf Shores over fall break. She became sick after eating raw oysters at Pink Pony mini bar. Try using a conjunction ( for, and,nor,but, or, yet, so). You might need a comma. How will you know if you need a comma???

  15. If you have two independent clauses (complete sentences) on either side of the conjunction, you will need a comma before the conjunction. Jennifer went to Gulf Shores over fall break. She became sick after eating raw oysters at Pink Pony mini bar.

  16. Create three sentences using a comma splice. Then, go back and correct those sentences combining them either with a semicolon or a conjunction and comma. • Ms. Deere’s example: Cinderella searched for love, Jack searched for gold. • Cinderella searched for love, but Jack searched for gold.

  17. Thirty-three • Eighty-four Create two sentences using a hyphen that separates numbers.

  18. Hyphen 2 Ms. Deere’s example: The students will have to re-take the test on Friday. Create two sentences using a hyphen with prefixes.

  19. Hyphen 3 • Example: • She was a good-natured dog. • good-natured is an adjective describing the dog. • Create three sentences using a hyphen to separate compound words operating as adjectives.

  20. Ms. Deere’s example: I’m going to tell you the story of the three – but shh– don’t tell anyone that I told you this story. Create two sentences using a dash in this way.

  21. Dash 2 • One girl in particulate – Jane— decided to ignore the sheriff's warnings. You will rarely use a dash like this.

  23. You should have a total of 40 sentences on your paper. Count your sentences now and make sure you have them all. Put your name on your sheet and pass it back.
