  8. Content : Report vs. Presentation • A mass body of text • Read at the reader’s own pace • Do not consist of a mass body of text • The more text on one slide, the harder it is to follow. • Presentations must be directly to the point. • Have a lot of information? Use more slides! REPORT PRESENTATION

  9. What is structure?

  10. Structure Structure • Has a logical beginning, middle and end • Is delivered in sequential order • Must be paced well (do not rush through material) Beginning Middle End

  11. Make a quick short story out of these three points. You may eliminate one or two points if you want. • I was full • I sat down and started to eat. • I was hungry • Opened my fridge and grabbed my leftover sandwich. • I took a spoon • It was delicious. • I ate my sandwich.

  12. HOMEWORK* • Come up with three versions of structure

  13. What happens if you rush a presentation? What happens if you do rush? • Reports have appendices and footnotes to guide the reader, the speaker must maintain the interest of the viewers.

  14. What happens if you rush a presentation? • If you rush and some people don’t know the material, it is hard for them to want to pay attention

  15. What happens if you rush a presentation? • There fore your presentation is lost • They will feel lost

  16. What is packaging?

  17. Packaging • Your presentation must be well prepared • Remember, with a report you have one reader, and with a presentation, you have to win over all of them at once. • TAKE THE TIME TO MAKE IT GREAT!

  18. What is the human element?

  19. The human element • A good presentation will be remembered more than a good report because it has a person attached to it! You need to tune into who the audience is in order to please their listening needs.

  20. HOMEWORK* • What is an audience? • Please list three different types of audiences there are

  21. What is an audience? • Audiences come in all shapes and sizes. • They may be a group of similar people or combinations of different groups of people. • You'll need to determine who they are in order to analyze your audience. http://writing.colostate.edu/guides/processes/audmod/pop2g.cfm

  22. Ask yourself • Who is your audience? • How do the characteristics, skills, opinions, and behaviors of your audience affect your purpose

  23. The Audience relies on your purpose • Why are you speaking? • What do you want audience members to know, think, believe, or do as a result of your presentation?

  24. You define your audience based on… 1. Education 2. Experience3. Patience, time constraints4. Relationship5. Age6. Sex7. Politics8. Occupation9. Income10. Attitude: interest, hostility, enthusiasm 11. Ethnic background12. Living environment

  25. Determining your Audience • Who they are (age, sex, education, economic status, political/social/religious beliefs) • What Level of Information they have about the subject (beginner to expert)

  26. Developing Audience Awareness • We automatically adjust our speech to be sure we communicate our message • Example of automatic adjustment: • three-year olds, we shorten sentences and use simpler words. When we talk to college professors, we use longer sentences and more formal language.

  27. HOMEWORK* • Pretend that you are giving a presentation to the following groups: • High school students • Parents • Business men and women • What are some topics that you would discuss with them? • How do you plan to hold their attention?

  28. Using your voice

  29. Your Voice • Your voice is one of the most valuable tools of a presenter • It carries the content that the audience leaves with

  30. We all have different voices… Your Voice • We all have different vocal qualities • Examples: • Too fast • Too high • Too soft • A problem we ALL face is listening to our own voice and learning to CHANGE our old ways.

  31. What is a vocal quality?

  32. Vocal Qualities • Volume • Tone • Pitch • Pace • Color

  33. Volume • Definition: how loud a sound is • The goal is to be heard in an audience without shouting • Good speakers lower their voice to draw the audience in, and raise it to make a point.

  34. Tone • Definition: the characteristics of a sound • A voice that is monotone is not fun to listen to. In fact I it makes you quite sleepy. • A voice that carries fear can frighten the audience • A voice that carries laughter can get the audience to smile

  35. Pace • Definition: This is how long a sound lasts. • Talking too fast causes the words and syllables to be short, while talking slowly lengthens them.

  36. Color • Definition: the mixture between projection and tone “This new assignment is going to be exciting.” • Say this line four different times • 1stexcited • 2nd sarcastic • 3rd with anger • 4th with sadness
