INTRODUCTION • Scientific publication:succinct presentation of the results of a research done with the scientific methodology • Journal Impact factor:the average number of citations of each article of the journal • is related to the journal, and not to the article; • the same journal may have highly citated articles and articles that are not citated at all • Article Citation number:number of times that the articles were quoted on other articles • is more precise in the aspect referred above • however, it is not constant in time THIRD PRESENTATION INTRODUCTION TO MEDICINE MAY 2007

DATA INTRODUTION IN SPSS • Department Attribution: when there were more than one FMUP authors from different departments, the article was attributed to all departments present in the address. • Authors From Hospital S.João: some authors did not adress their articles to FMUP, but to Hospital S. LIMITATIONS • Journals and/or articles not indexed at ISI or cited at the Relatório Anual 2005 were not analised or classified 2.DIFICULTIES FOUND • There are several designations for FMUP: • - FMUP • - Oporto School of Medicine • - Oporto Medical School • - Fac Med Oporto • - Oporto Univ Hospital • - … • Some articles that belong to FMUP authors are not signed with the faculty adress THIRD PRESENTATION INTRODUCTION TO MEDICINE MAY 2007

  22. Some articles are only adressed as HSJ, even if they belong to FMUP • Impact Factor of different areas are not comparable • 3. COMPARING WITH OTHER DATA • FMUP’s 2005 Annual Report • According to the FMUP’s 2005 Annual Report there were 149 articles indexed articles • We analised 169 articles indexed at ISI • Some of the articles that did not belongued to ISI according to FMUP’s 2005 Annual Report were indexed at Isi and vice-versa THIRD PRESENTATION INTRODUCTION TO MEDICINE MAY 2007
