Introduction • EUA established Council for Doctoral Educationin January 2008, as its own integral part, to support the development of doctoral studies in Europe. • The Launch Conference of the EUA Council for Doctoral Education took place at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, June 1-3, 2008. • Almost 300 academic leaders, researchers, policy makers and other stakeholders from 35 countries participated in this event. Motivation to participate in this conference... ... from a point of view of a DEUKS Project representative: • DEUKSis based on studies and surveys related to doctoral education in Europe, conducted by EUA. • Being halfways withDEUKSimplementation, and facing further and more ambitious projects on doctoral education in Serbia, to be on a ”hot spot” and hear about experiences and plans of others felt extremely appropriate. Objectives of EUA-CDE To enhance the quality of doctoral education at European universities by supporting • exchange and dissemination of good practice; • development of institutional policies; • availability of data; • dialogue with other stakeholders; • international dimension; • link between education and research; • doctorates and doctorate holders.
