  1. Future Skills Needs in the South African Chemical Sector as Influenced by the AND Image: Prosperous Capital Image: Crimson Bangladesh

  2. Purpose / objectives of study The study aims to identify future change drivers in the chemical sector in line with global trends, related specifically to the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) and Green Skills Image: Drivers for Change (UK)

  3. Background of study • Disruptive changes may occur in business models due to 4IR and Greening developments … • Therefore, it is critical to understand the relevant skills change drivers within these developments … • But before we go into the research findings … • Let’s first look at what 4IR and Greening means

  4. What does “Green” mean Image: Green Mom Image: NGR Plastic Recycling Technologies Image: National Cleaner Production Centre SA Image: Power Engineering Image: Bonitas Image: awarenessIDEAS

  5. Research Methodology • A literature review was done to identify the change drivers • Started with telephonic interviews but changed to … • Personal interviews due to the complexity of the questionnaire • Major operations were chosen for upstream chemicals • A sample of downstream operations were chosen • The aim is to have a representative sample in each sub-sector • These are preliminary findings from the 1st few interviews • Please provide more data or contacts where available!!

  6. 4IR Change Drivers or Technologies IF … THEN … Virtual Reality Image: Hydro politic Academy Connected Customers & Supply Chain Visibility Artificial on Real e.g. Sky View Real-time Monitoring of Customers Operations Image: CBTC Solutions 3D Printing Sensors & Connected Devices using IoT or Virtual Pvt Networks for example .. 7. Drivers (Principles) of Green Chemistry Also transport symbiosis Safer chemistry Tax Incentives for Improved Efficiency Greenhouse gas reporting for future carbon taxes Waste symbiosis Less waste Part of 4IR R&D R&D R&D Using less hazardous raw materials Greener end products R&D Also solvent recycling & water treatment Plant-based vs. petrochemical Also use of renewable energy Image: ScienceDirect
