Learning Targets • I can analyze the Populist Movement and its effect on American politics and society. • I can examine how industrial leaders gained power and wealth to expand their industries. • I can explain the factors that led to the US becoming a world power. • I can demonstrate how the US impacted the affairs of other countries. • I can explain how the US made numerous land acquisitions.

  3. Grover Cleveland • 24th President (1893-97) • Democrat • Only pres. to serve 2 nonconsecutive terms • Nation suffered through a big recession in his 2nd term (Panic of 1893) • Vetoed more bills than all previous presidents, combined!

Pullman Strike- Labor Topic • 1894: Workers making train cars go on strike in Illinois • Pullman factory was in a company town (houses and stores owned by company) • Pullman cut wages, but he did not decrease the rent of his houses. • Union went on strike, led by Eugene Debs. • Debs convinced all train employees across the nation to stop working to draw attention to the Pullman employees. • RR stop, riots begin, 30 dead!

  6. Pullman Strike • The strike meant US mail couldn't be delivered. • US courts ordered an injunction to end the strike, Debs refused. • Pres. Cleveland send in army, Debs arrested • Significance: last major labor dispute to turn violent

Imperialism • Imperialism is the practice of a powerful nation extending it’s influence over weaker nations to create an empire. • In the late 1800s the UK, France, Russia and Netherlands were claiming territory in Africa, Asia, and Pacific Ocean. • Emerging nations like the US, Germany, Japan, and Italy wanted empires of their own.

Causes of Imperialism • Economic • Get raw materials for mother country • Force the colony to buy things from mother country • Social • Spread Christianity • Spread your culture (“White Man’s Burden”) • Political • Military bases • Expand democracy (or whatever your gov) • Respect from other nations

Hawaii-Imperialism Topic • HI was a peaceful independent nation, with it’s own gov. • When Europeans/Americans 1st arrived they were welcomed. • Businessmen soon realized that HI’s climate was great for farming sugar and fruit. • Hawaii’s leader, Queen Liliuokalani, allowed American Sanford Dole to farm. • Dole sold his goods in US, but a high tariff on imported goods drove down his profits. • Dole asked Cleveland to annex HI; Cleveland refused because he is an anti-imperialist

  10. Hawaii • HI has no military, so Dole and 1,500 men easily deposed the queen and took control of HI • Dole then attempted to get HI annexed by the US, but Cleveland objected • HI remained an independent nation for 5 years, with Dole as it’s leader
