  2. GEM 2003 Adult Population Survey • Develop draft of the final Adult Population Survey Questionnaire • Identify possible survey firms in each of the participating countries: http://www.esomar.nl/directory_counlist.html • National teams from the following need to advise us • Equador • Iran • Tanzania • Uraguay • Develop the survey tender requests for the adult population survey

  3. GEM 2003 Adult Population Survey: tender for requests The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor program collects data on people’s attitudes to business and rates of business start ups on a countrywide basis. This is an expansion, to 40 countries, of a program started in 1999. Data collection for the 2003 round is to be completed by June 2003. The average interview length is 1.5 minutes and has never exceeded 2.5 minutes in a phone administration. The interview schedule is designed to be included in an ongoing omnibus or general-purpose marketing survey. There is a GEMNationalTeam of researchers in each of the countries. The entire survey effort is run by the GEM Coordination Team in London, England, responsible for all final decisions on design, receive data and other work products, and supervise payments.

  4. GEM 2003 Adult Population Survey • Review the tenders in terms of price; country recommendations; survey methodology esp re national phone coverage to decide on issues such as Phone or Face to face. • Wait for each countries’ money. • Pass on details of survey firm to each national team – national teams then decide on any extra variables and whether they can accommodate the cost of these.

  5. GEM 2003 Adult Population Survey • At some stage the final questionnaire is developed and passed on to all concerned • The data map and the question by question commentary is developed and passed on to the survey firm

  6. GEM 2003 Adult Population Survey • Deal with survey firms’ questions about the questionnaire and the skip pattern. • Develop the syntax for transforming ASCII data document into SPSS document.

  7. ADDENDA B: GEM 2002 ADULT SURVEY INTERVIEW SCHEDULE: Revision 5QUESTION BY QUESTION COMMENTARYThe following section is to be administered to all adult respondents, the first eight (8) items are yes/no, the last two have three response options. ============================================================================= 1a. You are, alone or with others, currently trying to start a new business, including any type of self-employment Yes No=============================================================================This item covers ANY AND ALL activity that could be considered any form of economic work, registered or unregistered, legal or illegal. So child care in the home, part time work as a carpenter, free-lance lawyer on the weekends, or any other activity would qualify. Encourage a YES in all situations when unclear.=============================================================================1b. You are, alone or with others, trying to start a new business or a new venture with your employer-- an effort that is part of your normal work Yes No =============================================================================This item covers any activity on the job where a NEW BUSINESS VENTURE may result, either stand alone or a branch or subsidiary. The response should be NO if the respondent is working on a new variation of a standard product—such as a new dress design or a new type of furniture or a new menu for an established restaurant.

  10. GEM 2003 Adult Population Survey • National teams need to evaluate the survey firm’s translation of the questionnaire and suggest any alterations – this often needs to be done at very short notice. Also check the accuracy of the skip pattern. • When the data arrives transform it into SPSS, and check descriptives for inconsistencies • Contact survey firms with questions about any of these
