Legislative Branch – Create a S ong Project

This project aims to create a song or tune that describes the qualifications and duties of Senators and Representatives in the U.S. Congress. Students will listen to examples, gain knowledge about the Legislative Branch, and create an original and creative song to showcase their understanding. The project will be graded based on the inclusion of qualifications, duties, term lengths, and overall creativity. Bonus points if presented in class. Due date: Monday/Tuesday.

  1. Legislative Branch – Create a Song Project Objectives Describe the qualifications to become a Senator or Representative in our U.S. Congress Describe the duties of the Legislative Branch

Activity • Listen to examples of the Legislative Branch from the other students paying special attention to the qualifications, term lengths, and duties of the Legislative Branch. • With a partner you will create a song, rap, jingle, or tune that includes the details for the qualifications term lengths, and duties of the Legislative Branch.

  3. What will you be graded on: • Song includes 3 formal qualifications for a Senator and 3 for a Representative: 6 • Song includes and explains at least 6 Legislative duties: 6 • Song includes 1 Senator and 1 Rep term length: 2 • Song is original and creative: 6 • Total: 20 points • Bonus if presented in class: 5 points • Due Date: Songs to be presented on Monday/Tuesday.

  4. General information about Congress! (more can be found in ch. 10.2-3) Congress is: • The House Of Representatives • The Senate Each state receives two members in the Senate regardless of it’s size or population. The number of Representatives your state receives is based on your state’s population.

  5. The House of Representatives • Consists of 435 members. Each member serves two year terms. • Requirements: • 25 years old. • Live in state and district. • Be a citizen of U.S. for 7 years.

  6. Senators Roy Blunt Consists of 100 members (Two from each state.) Each member serves for six year terms. Claire McCaskell Requirements: 30 years old Live in state Citizen for 9 years

  7. Spend Money Regulate Commerce Taxation Create Courts Powers of Congress Lawmaking Declare War Make all laws "necessary and proper" to carrying out the enumerated powers
