  4. STABILITY: Building Stable Lives Why Stability? We believe that people can and will help themselves when given a chance. Stability involves: • Supporting basic needs while increasing financial education • Helping people obtain skills development and job training • Assisting with emergency and long-term needs • Supporting youth development programs United Way invests in programs that help these peoplebuild stable lives so that they do not have to rely on community services or their neighbors for help.   5. STABILITY: Building Stable Lives What if you, or someone you know, needs help? The fastest way to find help is to call 2-1-1. 2-1-1 is United Way’s information and referral hotline that can connect folks who need help with local agencies who can give help. Its free, easy and confidential! Just dial 2-1-1, or 423-265-8000 outside of Hamilton County. • • In 2008 , 2-1-1 handled more than 40,000 calls for referral.   6. EDUCATION: Investing In Children Why Education? Education means investing in children so that they can achieve their full potential through: • Improving access to quality, affordable child care and early learning opportunities • Providing quality after-school and mentoring programs for youth • Helping improve early childhood education programs • Educating parents about the importance of their involvement in a child’s first three years EDUCATION: Investing in Children United Way invests in programs that prepare children for success in school, and in life.   7. EDUCATION: Investing in Children United Way prepares children for success in school and life: • Project Ready for School • Free book each month to children under age 5. More than 16,000 signed up! • Free “Learning Checkups” • Free classes for parents and caregivers • Neighborhood Reading Centers • United Way partners with neighborhoods, community groups and faith-based organizations to sponsor 19 Reading Centers, offering books and literacy resources to families in the neighborhoods they serve. • Funding for Pre-K Classrooms • Provided funds for two local Pre-Kindergarten classrooms. • Governor Bredesen has challenged United Ways in Tennessee to lead the charge in bringing Pre-K classrooms in every county.
