  4. North= Vietnamese Communists/ oppose French/ unify Vietnam under communism.

  5. South= non-communist Vietnamese

  11. U.S. supported Diem because he was anti-communist. U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles greet South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem at Washington National Airport

  12. Geneva Accords- temporary divide 17th parallel U.S. wanted Ngo Dinh Diem to be appointed Prime Minister by Bao Dai (President).

  13. SEATO- alliance that extended protection to South Vietnam, Cambodia & Laos……… Start of involvement which leads to direct involvement.

  14. 10/23/1955 what about the South? • Bao Dai vs. Ngo Dinh Diem in elections. • Diem’s cousin Ngo Dinh Nhu organized the elections.

  15. Diem recorded 98.2% of the vote. • More people voted then were registered…..Really? • 3 days later Diem formed the Republic of Vietnam. • Diem becomes president- authoritarian leader.
