  2. What is Humanism? A intellectual movement that: • Focused on the study of the Classics – works from ancient Greece and Rome • Emphasized human innovation, instead of spiritualism • Believed in reason – the ability to think logically Petrarch is considered the father of humanism.

  3. Christian Humanism • Applying humanist beliefs to Christianity • Using reason to interpret holy scripture • Emphasize the role of the individual over the church and its clergy • Led to Reformation in northern Europe Desiderius Erasmus wrote “The Praise of Folly,” a critical look at church practices, especially the clergy.

  4. Civic Humanism • Applying humanist beliefs to civic life • Emphasize an individual’s responsibility to use their talents in service to the state. • Use reason to make civic decisions (i.e. role of citizen, how to rule, laws) • Developed idea of “Renaissance Man” In his book, The Prince, Niccolò Machiavelli argues leaders should be pragmatic, as opposed to idealistic.
