  2. Underground Vs. Mainstream Dyme A Duzin

  3. Mainstream Rap/Hip-Hop • Mainstream: belonging to or characteristic of a principal, dominant, or widely accepted group, movement, style, etc • Mainstream artists are the guys/girls with their singles being played all over the radio • They are very popular and usually have very strong followers, and very many critics • Mainstream artists include: Eminem, Lil Wayne, and Kanye West

  4. Pros & Cons to Mainstream Rap/Hip-Hop Pros Cons • More popularity • More money • Major record deals • Larger fan base • Higher criticism • “sell out” • Record label control • More “haters”

  5. Underground Rap/Hip-Hop • Underground: hidden or secret; not open • Underground (or independent) artists are the ones usually without a major record deal and little radio play • They have small but very passionate fans, who help them create a “buzz” to help the artist get noticed • Underground artists include: Traphik, Prince EA, and Troop 41

  6. Pros & Cons to Underground Rap/Hip-Hop Pros Cons • Passionate fans • Less expectations • More freedom • More money goes to the artist • Less popularity • Less expectations • More room for failure • Less money

  7. What Would You Choose? Lupe Fiasco

  8. Live Vs. Studio Quality Wale

  9. Studio Quality • Studio quality is typically what you hear on the radio. • Its very clean with no background noise. • The beat is very audible and you can put effects on the voice. (e.gautotune, reverb)

  10. Live Quality • Live quality isn’t heard very often. Primarily because it won’t really be played on radio. • You can hear the energy in the crowd and the artist during the song. • Some artists sound worse live because of the effects from the studio. But others sound better live.

  11. Which Do You Prefer? Raekwon

  12. Other Choices… Roscoe Dash

  13. Other choices in rap/hip-hop include: • Southern Rap or Northern Rap? • Solo artists or Rap Groups? • Which record label is the best? • Who is the greatest of all-time?
