Short Tailed Sheep among Finno-Ugric Tribes Finnsheep • A very fertile sheep breed (already at 3 months fertile) • Up til 8 lambs at a time • Exported to more than 40 countries • Weight of rams is 85-105 kg, ewes weight is 65-75 kg. • There are 15 000 pure Finnsheep in Finland. The production of 5000 white, 1000 black and 500 brown sheep is followed.

Short Tailed Sheep among Finno-Ugric Tribes Åland Island Sheep • The protection of Åland island sheep in Finland was started quite recently. • There is about 40 farmers in the sheep register. • In 2006 about 600 ewes got lambs. • Own organisation since 2004, register kept for 10 years. • Rams weight is about 60 kg, ewes about 40 kg. • 50 % of rams and 20 % of ewes have horns • Many different colours.

  18. Short Tailed Sheep among Finno-Ugric Tribes Native Sheep in Karelia, Russia The population is fragmented and isolated. Information is scarce as no records are kept. The size of the population is not known. A first small investigation in May 2005 shows that there are small herds of short tailed sheep between Lake Onega and Lake Ladoga as well as between Lake Ladoga and the Finnish border. Main part of the keepers are old women. There is also short tailed sheep in North Karelia Viena area (north of Lake Onega).

Short Tailed Sheep among Finno-Ugric Tribes Case: Native Sheep in Estonia • Investigations started 2001 • UNESCO financed genetic investigations in 2005 • Results show 4 different groups: Ruhnu, Hiiumaa, Saaremaa, Kihnu. • There is about 400 native sheep left in Estonia. There is still many uninvestigated heards. • The sheep are not officially recognized and no protection program exists. • There are about 25-40 (estimation) farmers keeping Estonian Native sheep. • Kihnu and Hiiumaa sheep are smaller than Ruhnu and Saaremaa sheep.
