  1. Si mes rêves se réalisent, j’aurai mon propre garage à 30 ans. If my dreams come true I will have my own garage when I am 30 years old. Si j’ai de l’argent je voyagerai If I have money I will travel.

  2. Si j’ai de bonnes notes, j’irai à l’université. If I have good marks I will go to university. Si je continue mes études de français, je travaillerai en France. If I continue studying french, I will work in France.

  3. Si + Present tense then followed by what you are going to do in the future. This kind of sentence using si implies that what you are talking about is probable or quite likely to happen. NB: Si can’t be followed directly by the future tense.

  4. Try these examples: • If I can, I will study music. Si je peux, j’étudierai la musique. 2) If we don’t speak french, we will not be able to travel to france. Si on ne parle pas le français, on ne pourra pas voyager en France. 3) I am going to get married if I find a someone that I like. Je me marieraisi je trouvequelqu’unquej’aime. NB: The si part of the sentence doesn’t always have to be at the beginning , it can also come as the second part of the sentence like we see in example 3.

  5. S’il gagnait au loto, il partirait en France. If he was to win lotto, he would go to France. Si j’habitais en Europe, je pourraisparlercourammenttroislangues. If I was to live in Europe, I would be able to speak three languages fluently.

  6. Si je me mariais, j’auraisquatreenfants. If I was to get married, I would have four children. Si je ferais le tour du monde, je visiterais beaucoup de pays! If I was to go on a world tour, I would visit lots of countries.

  7. What tenses are these sentences using with si? Si + imperfect, followed by the conditional.

  8. What meaning does this imply? That what you say in the second half of the sentence with out the si is possible, but it is not definite that it is going to happen.

  9. Try these examples: • If I was to earn lots of money I could retire when I am 30. • 2) If my brother was to live in New Zealand, I would visit him more often. • 3) If I was to do volunteer work in Africa, I would meet lots of interesting people.

  10. Note: • There are three ways of using si in sentences in French and today we have seen two of them. • Si + present tense followed by the second part in the future tense: • Eg: Si j’ai de l’argent je voyagerai: If I have money, I will travel. • This use of ‘si’ implies that the thing in the second part of the sentence will happen if the thing in the si clause happens first – it implies that it is probable. • 2) Si + imperfect tense, followed by the second part in the conditional tense: • Eg: Si je faisais le tour du monde, je visiterais beaucoup de pays: If I was to go on a world tour, I would visit lots of countries. • This use of si implies that there is a possibility of the thing happening. • Both these constructions can be used when talking about our future plans.

  11. Write three sentences of each of these kinds of “si” structures that you might be able to use when talking about your future plans.
