  1. Dr. Sigmund Freud 6 May 1856 – 23 September 1939

  2. Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) • -Austrian, doctor • -father of psychoanalysis • One of the first psychologists to study human motivation • -Psychiatry vs. Psychology • -up until 20th century frontal lobotomies were performed on patients

  3. Back ground • Unconscious: • passive storehouse or dynamic • Different levels ,consciousness, preconscious. Unconscious. • Sex: • Fixed amount of libido • Power of sex • Childhood sexuality • Distrust of the body • Seduction hypothesis controversy

  4. Two basic conclusions of Freud • Infantile sexuality was a reality • When patients recall sexual memories from early childhood, the unconscious does not differentiate between truth and “emotionally charged fiction” • Treatment needed to help patients distinguish between psychic reality and actual reality

  5. Freud-believed that mental illness is a result of nurture, not nature. He asked the question: “What makes people do things?” Answer: MOTIVATION Needs motivate human behaviour (food, shelter, clothing…)

  6. People are born with a certain number of instincts or DRIVES (human instinctive behavior) The human mind has 3 aspects which influence behavior:

  7. Do you think Freud’s insight still alive nowadays? • Yes, even for a guy who died in 1939, his work is incredibly out of date. We’ve learned much about the human brain and the way our psychologies work since that time — but he got the ball rolling. Much of today’s work is still predicated on many of his original insights. Some areas of inquiry have been refined and expanded, while others abandoned and dismissed altogether in favor of new theories. This is good. This is how science advances
