DataSpace is a third party add-on to ArcGIS Desktop • Developed by US Bureau of Reclamations • Allows the user to arrange data without actually moving or changing the data at all • DataSpace does this creating a pointer to the data; this pointer is what is actually being moved within the DataSpace application What is DataSpace

  3. Easy organize files into virtual directories • Can create project specific directories • Promotes sharing via the enterprise libraries • Reduces need for file duplication How can DataSpace benefit me

  7. Click File->New Root Folder • Enter name for Folder, Click “OK” Create new Root Folder

  8. Open ArcGIS Desktop, as normal • Click DataSpace icon in the toolbar to open DataSpace window • Click the add data button • Navigate to desired data • Click the “Add” button • Drag layer from Table of Contents, drop in DataSpace window Adding data elements to DataSpace

  9. Open ArcGIS Desktop, as normal • Click DataSpace icon in toolbar to open DataSpace window • Double click data element in the DataSpace window • Layer appears in ArcGIS Desktop Table of Contents Adding data to a map from DataSpace

  10. Method 1 • Drag and Drop data element to new location • Method 2 • Right click on data element, Click “Cut” • Right click folder to place data element in • Click “Paste” Move Data element in DataSpace

  11. Right click on data element, Click “Copy” • Right click on folder to place data element in • Click “Paste” Copy Data element in DataSpace

Create folder on file share server • Copy data to file share • Follow steps in “Create new Root Folder” • Follow steps in “Adding data elements to DataSpace” • Right click on root folder, Click “Export to DataSpace XML” • Navigate to the Folder created in step one • Name the file “GIS.XML” • Click “Save” • Close and reopen DataSpace Create new server node

  15. Corrected by saving workspace and reopening • DataSpace cannot find libraries when opened • Commonly happens upon first use DataSpace cannot find server
