4. The State Flag of Florida • Adopted in 1899, Florida's flag represents the land of sunshine, flowers, palm trees, rivers and lakes. The seal features the sun, a palmetto tree, a steamboat sailing and a Native American (Seminole woman) scattering flowers.

6. State Motto of Florida • ‘In God We Trust’ had been accepted as the state motto of Florida since the late 1800’s but wasn’t officially adopted until 2006. In July 2006, Governor Jeb Bush signed House Bill 1145, making ‘In God We Trust’ the official state motto.

17. Early Settlement in Florida The first land animals entered Florida approximately 24.8 million years ago. Native Americans first inhabited Florida approximately 14,000 years ago. On March 3, 1845, Florida became the 27th state of the United States of America.

18. Florida Weather • Summertime is hot and humid • Winters are mild with cold temperatures occasionally • Hurricane season, the most notorious weather in Florida, runs from June 1st to November 30th

Agriculture in the Sunshine State • Managed by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services • Slogan to consumers is “Fresh from Florida” • Food products are grown on over 47,500 commercial farms on over 9.25 million acres • Florida ranked second in the nation in the value of vegetable production, with cash receipts of $1.6 billion.  Florida ranked seventh in all crops with cash receipts of $6.2 billion

Florida Agriculture • Florida ranks first in the United States in the value of production of oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, sugarcane for sugar and seed, squash, watermelons, sweet corn, fresh-market snap beans, fresh-market tomatoes, and fresh-market cucumbers. • Florida ranked second in the United States in the value of production of strawberries, bell peppers, and cucumbers for pickles. • Florida ranked fourth in the value of production of honey.

Industry in the State of Florida In 2000, there were 14 Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Florida The number one industry in the state is Tourism with Florida as the top listed travel destination in the world. Globally, Florida industry expands across the globe as 40% of all U.S. exports to Latin and South America pass through Florida

The space industry represents $4.5 billion of the state's economy. Florida Wildlife • Wildlife of Florida is rich and varied • Animal species in Florida can be found on land and in freshwater and saltwater environments • There are some wildlife that are in danger of extinction • Wildlife is monitored by many agencies, to include the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission

25. Florida Plant Life • Plant life can be found inland or on the miles of shoreline, both freshwater and saltwater • Some plants, such as the sea oats, are protected by State Legislature

26. Fort Mose • Was called the Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose • Served as the northern defense for St. Augustine • Later, was the first free community of ex-slaves

27. Fort Castillo De San Marcos • Spanish built fort in St. Augustine • Construction lasted 23 years • Now serves as a popular tourist attraction

28. Henry Morrison Flagler Henry Flagler was an American oil tycoon, hotel creator and railroad developer. He founded Palm Beach, Florida, and is known as the Father of Miami, Florida. Flagler College is named after him in St. Augustine. Flagler County and the city of Flagler Beach are named for him as well.

29. Famous Floridians • Philip Donald Estridge, born in Jacksonville and lived in Boca Raton. Estridge led development of the original IBM Personal Computer (PC), and thus is known as "father of the IBM PC". • Janet Reno, born in Miami, was the first United States Attorney General who was a woman.

30. Vacationing in Florida • From the Panhandle to the Keys, lots of vacation spots in Florida on the beach • Inland, one might choose the amusement parks such as Disney World and Busch Gardens
