  1. My Servants The Prophets Major Lessons From Selected Minor Prophets

  2. Introduction - Review Paul’s example of Jesus, and his own application of Psalm 69:9b to Jesus in Romans 15:3 illustrates the benefit of the Old Testament scriptures to us. Then he drives home his point (Romans 15:4). A prophet is a spokesman for another. Illustration: Moses and Aaron (Exodus 4:10-15-16, 7:1-2)

  3. Introduction – History of Edom Esau was called Edom… Esau despised his birthright (Genesis 25:28-34, Hebrews 12:16-17) Isaac’s prophecy (Genesis 27:33-41) ”yea and he shall be blessed” (Genesis 27:33, Hebrews 11:20) “…shalt serve thy brother…break his yoke…” (Genesis 27:40) Edom served and revolted (2 Samuel 8:11-14, 2 Kings 8:16, 20)

  4. Introduction – History of Edom Esau is Edom, he is the father of the Edomites (Genesis 36:8, 43) Teman was a grandson of Esau (Genesis 36:15) Teman known for “wisdom” (Jeremiah 49:7) Edom refused Israel passage (Numbers 20:14-21)

  5. Introduction – Time of Obadiah Internal data “in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem…” (Obadiah 1:11) “neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction….” (Obadiah 1:12) Esau, Philistines and Samaria are noted together. (Does this dictate affinity? BAS) (Obadiah 1:19)

  6. Simple Timeline of the Kings Kings of Israel Saul, David, Solomon Obadiah? Kings of Judah Jehoram Ahaz Zedekiah

  7. Simple Timeline of the Kings Kings of Israel Saul, David, Solomon Obadiah? Kings of Judah Jehoram Ahaz Zedekiah

  8. Simple Timeline of the Kings Kings of Israel Saul, David, Solomon Obadiah? Kings of Judah Jehoram Ahaz Zedekiah

  9. Introduction – Time of Obadiah Early date. During the days of king Jehoram of Judah, the Philistines and Arabians invaded Judah (2 Chronicles 21:16-17). Also during the days of king Jehoram, Edom revolted against Judah (2 Kings 8:20-22). I can’t tell that these two events coincide or that there is collusion between these nations.

  10. Introduction – Time of Obadiah Mid date. During the days of Ahaz king of Judah, the Edomites smite Judah, and the Philistines invade the cities of the low country (2 Chronicles 28:16-19). I can’t tell that there is collusion between these nations.

  11. Introduction – Time of Obadiah Late date at the fall of Judah (i.e. 2 Chronicles 36:17-20). Consider Jeremiah’s late prophecy against Edom (Jeremiah 49:7-22, so similar to Obadiah) Consider Ezekiel’s late prophecy against Edom, “…Edom hath dealt against the house of Judah by taking vengeance …” (Ezekiel 25:12-14) Edom’s cursing “in the day of Jerusalem; who said, rase it (scrape, level).” (Psalm 137:7)

  12. Introduction – Time of Obadiah The wording of Obadiah 1:11-12 seems to match well with the latter prophecies in Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Psalm 137. The wording of the destruction in Obadiah 1:11-12 does not appear “limited” in scope.

  13. Introduction – Outline 1:1-9, 10-14 Judgement to Edom 1:15-21 Victory to Jacob

  14. Introduction – Outline 1:1-9, 10-14 Judgement to Edom Edom is judged for their pride and their violence to Jacob. 1:15-21 Victory to Jacob The day of the Lord is near. Edom will be like stubble, consumed by the house of Jacob (Judah), and the house of Joseph (Israel). Jacob will be delivered, and the kingdom will be the Lord’s.

  15. Judgement to Edom (Obadiah 1:1-9, Jeremiah 49:7-22) Edom is proud, “who shall bring me down” (Obadiah 1:3) God will bring them down (Obadiah 1:4) God’s plunder will be extensive compared to a robber (Obadiah 1:5-7) The wise of Edom will be destroyed, the mighty of Teman will be dismayed (Obadiah 1:8-9)

  16. Application 1 Consider Edom and be careful against pride. Thoughts of 9/11, 2001 such as, “we’ll never let this happen again.” Remember: “Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain” (Psalm 127:1) No king is saved by numbers, by strength, by horses. God’s eye is on those who fear him. (Psalm 33:16-18). God appoints our times and bounds and gives us all things to enjoy (Acts 17:25-26, 1 Timothy 6:17). God gives us our freedom! God “keeps the city.”

  17. Application 2 Remember that God rules in the kingdoms of men God brought evil on the nation called by his name. Did the other nations think that they would escape? God would call for a sword on all the inhabitants of the earth. (Jeremiah 25:29-31)

  18. Application 2 Remember that God rules in the kingdoms of men God uses nations for judgment, e.g. Assyria (Isaiah 10, Amos 6:14, Jeremiah 50:18) God sent them against Israel (10:5-6, Amos 6:14) The Assyrian didn’t know that God was using him (10:7) After God finished with him, he would punish him (10:12-14, Jeremiah 50:18).

  19. Introduction – Outline 1:1-9, 10-14 Judgement to Edom. Edom is judged for their pride and their violence to Jacob. 1:15-21 Victory to Jacob The day of the Lord is near. Edom will be like stubble, consumed by the house of Jacob (Judah), and the house of Joseph (Israel). Jacob will be delivered, and the kingdom will be the Lord’s.
