Background • The Institute of Medicine (IOM) landmark report, Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health • Increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80% by 2020 • Double the number of nurses with a doctorate by 2020 • Build an infrastructure for the collection and analysis of interprofessional health care workforce data • Ensure that comprehensive data regarding nursing workforce are timely and publicly accessible

Kansas Acute Care Hospital RN Workforce Survey • The Registered Nurses (RNs) Workforce Survey was sent to 139 Acute Care Hospitals’ administrators across Kansas • Aggregated organizational data on Kansas RN workforce: • diversity (age, gender, race/ethnicity, and military status) • Educational preparation • Hospital BSN hiring policy • 51 hospitals responses with a response rate of 36.7%

  7. Kansas Health Department RN Workforce Survey • The Registered Nurses (RNs) Workforce Survey was sent to 105 county health departments across Kansas • Aggregated organizational data • 49 responses with a response rate of 46.7%

Kansas RN-BSN Programs Survey • The survey was sent to 14 programs in Kansas and all 14 responses were received for a 100% response rate. • Aggregated data on the characteristics of students enrolled in Kansas RN-BSN programs • 3 programs are under revision with no students currently enrolled

  14. Enrollment and Graduation • Enrollment: 939 students enrolled in the 11 Kansas RN-BSN programs as of February 28, 2013. • Graduation: 269 students graduated from the 11 programs in 2012.

  16. Limitations • Relatively low response rate (36.7%, 46.7%) • Aggregated organizational data • A comprehensive and sustainable data collection mechanism is needed.

  17. What’s Next? • Kansas RNs Survey • Purpose: To gather data on Kansas RNs concerning their educational preparation and diversity • KSBN Licensure Renewal Process • Purpose: To increase collection of workforce data

  18. Obtaining RN Workforce Data & Educational Level at Time of RN License Renewal through the Kansas State Board of Nursing Proposal to Present to the Education Committee, Kansas State Board of Nursing

  19. Purpose • To gather data on supply of nursing workforce and current educational levels from all Kansas Registered Nurses (RN) through licensure renewal by adding additional required questions.

  20. Background • Multiple organizations recommend that nursing workforce data are current and publicly accessible • In Kansas, a central mechanism to collect complete data about the nursing workforce is lacking • National Nursing Workforce Minimum Workforce Dataset • Demand • Education • Supply

  21. Impact • With comprehensive data on nursing workforce, specific initiatives and effective strategies can be developed to assist Kansas nurses advance their education. • The ultimate outcome is to enhance the quality of healthcare received by all Kansans.
