  2. Overview • Largest terrestrial biome • Coniferous forest • Pines, spruces, larches • Covers most of Canada • Different areas have different species

  3. Location Mostly Canada and Russia Few areas in the northern United States Some areas in Northern Europe; Poland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland

  4. Climate • Largest land biome • 29% of worlds forest • Lowest annual average temperatures after the tundra • Winter minimums tend to be lower than the tundra • Low precipitation 200-750mm annually and in some areas 1000mm • Average temperatures range from -5° to 5° Celsius • Temperatures may vary from range in the northern and southern most areas

  5. Soil • Tends to be young and poor nutrients • Lacks deep, enriched soil that is usually present in deciduous forests • Thin soil due to cold temperature • Fallen leaves & moss remain on the floor for long periods of time, which limits the amount of nutrients contributing to the soil • Acidic soul due to pine needles so the floor only has lichens • In clearings some herbs and berries can grow

  6. Dominant Animals • 85 mammal species • 130 fish species • 32,000 insect species • 300+ bird species (30 stay for the winter) • Few reptile and amphibian species • Moose, Caribou, Bison, Elk, vole, porcupine, bears, raccoons, toads, fish

  7. Dominant Plants • More animal species than plants • Oak, Maple, Elm, Lime • Lichen, berries, Larch, Spruce, Pine, Fir • Birch, Aspen, Willow, ferns

  8. Adaptations For survival • Hibernation in the winter • Fish have adapted to live in the water under the ice • Species have adapted in their natural ranges to survive • Layers of fur or feathers

  9. Threats • Lumber harvest • Clear-cutting • Climate Change • Invasive insects • Spruce Bark beetles • Aspen Leaf miner

  10. Protection • 8% is protected in Canada • 1,500 scientists • 13,000 km² are protected • 10,700 km² park created • 3,000 km² waterway park
