  2. 1. somberly • adverb • When you act somberly, you speak and act in a serious way. • The teacher somberly told the students that they lost their recess.

  3. 2. stammers • Verb • A person who stammers speaks with difficulty, often stopping or repeating himself or herself. • Laura stammers as she reads her report in front of the whole class.

  4. 3. monopolize • Verb • People who monopolize something control it and prevent others from using it. • My brother tries to monopolize the computer at home.

  5. 4. deflated • Verb • If someone feels deflated, he or she has lost confidence about something. • Sarah felt deflated about swimming after she lost 3 races in a row.

  6. 5. enraptured Verb A person who is enraptured is delighted and thrilled with something. The kids practiced for a play all year and were enraptured when they finally got to perform it.

  7. 6. enterprising Adjective People who are enterprising do new and difficult things in order to reach their goals. Matt took the enterprising step of starting a recycling club at school.

  8. 7. cumbersome Adjective Something that is cumbersome is large, heavy, and difficult to handle. The box was too cumbersome to lift into the attic, so we left it in the basement.
