  1. Story Booklet Project(40 points) For this assignment we will focus upon: Elements of a Short Story, art& a little writing as well. You will create a Short Story Map, Plot Diagram, Summary and Book Cover to create on a display to help you review for our test. By the end of the unit as a student you should be able to identify and articulate the following elements of a short story: • Characterization: Direct and Indirect • Conflicts Types: Internal, External (man vs. man, man vs. nature, man vs. society) • Plot Structure: Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, & Dénouement. • Setting: Time and Place • Theme: Ideas and morals within each story

Story Booklet Project(40 points) • The assignment will be completed by the following steps: (Please check off each one as you go). • _____Step 1(Select Your Story): Select one of the following stories to do this complete assignment on and write it on the line below: “A Sound of Thunder,” “The Interlopers,” “The Lady or The Tiger,” “The Cask of Amontillado,” “Thank You Ma’am” “The Necklace,” or another story of your preference. • Selected Story:___________________________________ • _____Step 2 (Create Your Short Story Map): You will create a visual map on a separate sheet of paper detailing elements of a short story. Replace the images and words below with elements from the story you have chosen. (10 points) • _____ Step 3 (Create Plot Diagram): Fill out the plot diagram (p.2) by labeling the plot structure and writing a one sentence explanation for each part of the plot. (10 points) • _____Step 4(Story Summary): You will learn a recipe for writing a short story summary and use it to create a summary for the short story you have selected for your booklet. (10 points) • _____Step 5(Book Cover): You will create an artistic and neat book cover to put on top of your short story map, diagram and Summary. (10 points)

  5. Summary Recipe • 1 Cup of Plot/Setting: • 2 Teaspoons of Characters: • Who are the main characters? Describe their actions and personalities and their role in the story. • 2 Tablespoons of Excitement: • 1 Teaspoon of Recommendation: Write a summary of the story. Overall At least 4 sentences. Select a section in the story that has an exciting event. Write about that event—what led up to it, what happened, and how it. Who would you recommend this book to? Why?

Critique Short Story Summaries Listen to the review of the short story “A Sound of Thunder” fill out the checklist and rank the summary on a 1 to 10 scale. _____1 Cup of Plot/Setting: _____2 Teaspoons of Characters: _____2 Tablespoons of Excitement: _____1 Teaspoon of Recommendation: Was there anything the summary could have done better?
