Silicone properties and uses

  • Silicone is heat resistant, rubber like, and an inert synthetic compound

  • Doesn’t stick to many sub straights

  • Low toxicity, thermal conductivity, and chemical reactivity

  • Ability to repel water

  • Does not support microbiological growth

  • Good electrical insulation

  • Uses: Sealants, adhesives, lubricants, medical applications, cookware and insulation

  • 1) Liquid injection molding(LIM)- most used synthetic compound

  • 2) Transfer molding- custom pieces, premixed and molded, easy for rapid production

  • 3) Insert molding- allows for molding plastics into pre molded objects or metals.
