Background • Previous consultation closed March 2012 • As a result the Minister made a statement in June that: • teachers in maintained schools continue to be required to be registered and for the registration body to continue to have a disciplinary function; • others in the education workforce also to be registered and for that registration body to have disciplinary functions;

  3. Background • the registration body will be formed by building on the experience of the General Teaching Council for Wales which will be renamed and reconfigured to become the registration body for the education workforce; • in addition to the core function of registration and discipline, over time the registration body would have a range of advisory functions and be able to undertake work in relation to these functions. • The registration body will also have a role in promoting career opportunities in education and effective workforce data sharing.

  4. 2nd Consultation • Set out further detail in relation to : • Who will be covered by registration • further education teachers and learning support staff • work based learning tutors and learning support staff • unqualified teachers and school based teaching and learning assistants • youth workers

  7. Next steps • Consultation closed on the 19th October • Consider responses and publish summary before Christmas • Proposed Education Bill presented to the National Assembly for Wales Summer 2013 • Proposals considered by NAW up until June 2014 • New organisation operational from April 2015.

  8. What will it mean for the workforce ? • 21,000 School Support Staff • 7,000 Further Education Teaching Staff • No data of Work base Learning • Small number of youth workers
