  2. Restate • Write a strong topic sentence based on the question. • You may re-state words from the original question if it helps.

  3. Answer • Further explain your topic sentence in your own words… • …but based upon an understanding of the text.

  4. Prove • Use evidence to support your answer. • When responding to literature, evidence consists of direct sentences from the text (usually 1-3). • You must put quotation marks around these sentences.

  5. Top it Off • Write a sentence that concludes your thought. • It explains how the sentence you quoted supports your answer. • You don’t end your paragraph with evidence; you end it with your final thought about it. • This helps make your argument more convincing.

  6. EXAMPLE • What kind of person is Aegeus? • R estate • Aegeusis the kind of person who… • You usually only need half a sentence to restate part of the question.

  7. Answer • ...strives to be both fair and smart as a king. • He wants to be fair to Medea, but he also knows he has to maintain good relationships with some of Medea’s enemies. • Note that the completion of the first sentence is only part of the answer. You must elaborate in at least one additional sentence.

  8. Prove • He strikes a deal with her: • “I shall not agree to take you out of this country; / But if you by yourself can reach my house, then you / Shall stay there safely….” • In order to prove your answer, you must introduce your sentences. • Then you quote your sentences.

  9. Top it Off • By asking Medea to come to Athens on her own, the king helps her, but protects himself as well. He has now put Medea in a position to help him in return. • These final points remove any doubt your reader might have about your answer and your proof.

  10. The Whole Paragraph Together What kind of person is Aegeus? Aegeus is the kind of person who strives to be both fair and smart as a king. He wants to be fair to Medea, but he also knows he has to maintain good relationships with some of Medea’s enemies. He strikes a deal with her: “I shall not agree to take you out of this country;/But if you by yourself can reach my house, then you/Shall stay there safely….” By asking Medea to come to Athens on her own, the king protects her, but protects himself as well. He has now put Medea in a position to help him in return.
