  1. Pt. 5 The Holy Spirit Gifts of the Holy Spirit “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.” 1 Cor. 12:1

  2. Gifts of the Holy Spirit “And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch.” Acts 5:12 Acts 3:1-7 Peter healed a man lame from birth Acts 6:1-8 - Apostles gave a gift to others - Stephen did “great wonders and miracles”

  3. Gifts of the Holy Spirit Acts 19:6 "And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.“ 2 Tim. 1:6 "Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands."

  4. Only Apostles gave gifts of Holy Spirit Acts 8:4- 25 Philip in Samaria - converted Simon Peter and John came from Jerusalem and laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit 18. And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, 19. saying, "Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit."

  5. Variety of Gifts 1 Cor. 12:4-11 Nine Gifts are listed - Three Groups of Gifts • Intellectual Powers • (1) “Word of Wisdom” • (2) “Word of Knowledge” • (3) “Faith” • 2. Exhibit faith of one who possesses gift • (4) “Gifts of healing” • (5) “Working of miracles” • (6) “Prophecy” • (7) “Discerning of Spirits” • 3. Gifts of Tongues • (8) “Various tongues” • (9) “Interpretation of tongues”

  6. Gifts were to Confirm the Preaching Mark 16:20 "And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with [them], and confirming the word with signs following. Amen." Romans 1:11 "For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;"

  7. These gifts were to cease 1 Corinthians 13:8 “Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.” 1Cor. 13:9 “For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10. But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.”

  8. What is “That which is Perfect”? “In Part” Time of miraculous gifts Eph. 4:8-12 Temporary system for early church v. 13 “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man.”

  9. What is “That which is Perfect”? “That which is perfect” Second Coming of Christ Why did Paul not say: “But when Christ is come” In part state now Col.2:10 “Ye are complete in him” Completion of Revelation “perfect” - full, complete, mature Jas.1:25 “perfect law of liberty” Eph.4:13 “till we all come in the unity of the faith”

  10. The Gifts have Ceased “perfect law of liberty” describes the gospel revealed Now the Spirit works through the word to accomplish his work. The Spirit: sanctifies, convicts, saves and continues to exert power When God’s word was completed then the signs were no longer needed.

  11. The Gifts have Ceased The church is older than the New Testament Heb. 2:1-4 - in early years they needed the gifts to confirm the message. These gifts were given by laying on of the hands of the apostles. These gifts would last only until the death of the last apostle and the death of the last person upon whom the apostles laid their hands.

  12. What about Speaking in Tongues? Some today claim that they are speaking in tongues. In the first century tongues meant “languages” Today it is gibberish and noise. Not an intelligent language “…whether there be tongues, they shall cease…” 1 Cor. 13:8

  13. Four Measures of the Holy Spirit • Spirit with Measure = Christ • Baptism of Holy Spirit = Apostles • Gifts of the Holy Spirit = 1 Cor. 12 • Ordinary - Indwelling of Holy Spirit
