Preliminaries • Pre-class (10 classwork points): • Take out your grade record sheets. • Take out a sheet of notebook paper. • Write your name and today’s date in the upper left corner. • Write “Can Animals Think?”centered on the top line. • Divide it into 3 equal columns. • Label the columns on the fourth line as follows: • Left column: “K” • Center column: “W” • Right column: “L”

  3. Objective: • The students will be able to read, understand and respond to an informational text. • The students will be able to generate research questions by completing a K-W-L chart.

  4. Review: QNTs • Be sure you can define the following: • Quotes • Notes • Thoughts

  5. Focus Lesson: Can Animals… • K-W-L Charts • What we already know • What we want (need) to know • What we learned • Vocabulary (pp. 26) • Pre-reading: “Can Animals Think?” (pp. 27-28) • List at least 1 research question in the “W” column. • Guided Instruction: reading and reflecting

  6. Closing Activity • Reading Check (60 classwork pts.) • Divide into groups of 3 (max.) • Turn to p. 30 and complete the Reading Check. • Be sure that the names of all group members and the period # are listed on the check sheet.
