  2. The Earth’s Layers

  3. The Earth is divided into three main layers.

  4. Core • The core of the Earth is much like a ball of very hot metals. • There are two layers of the core.

  5. Inner Core • The inner core is a solid ball of metal (iron & nickel) • It is the heaviest, densest area of earth. • It is also the hottest, because it is under pressure.

  6. Inner Core • In our model, this will be represented by the solid candy. • Why did we choose solid candy to represent this?

  7. Outer Core • The inner core is a liquid ball of metal (mainly iron) • Iron is easily magnetized, and the outer core is thought to be the reason why Earth has a magnetic field.

  8. Outer Core • In our model, this will be represented by pudding. • Why did we choose pudding?

  9. Mantle • The mantle is the largest layer of the Earth. • It is made of hot, dense rock. The rock in the mantle is solid, but it flows like asphalt because of the temperature differences found in the mantle. It is hotter near the core, and cooler near the crust.

  10. Mantle • We are using whipped cream to represent the mantle. • Why?

  11. Mantle • The movement of the mantle create the movement of the Earth’s plates.

  12. Lithosphere • One layer of the crust of the Earth is broken into many pieces called plates. The plates move along the soft mantle which is the layer located located below the crust.

  13. Lithosphere • We are using airheads to represent the lithosphere. • Why?

  14. Lithosphere • The plates move along smoothly but sometimes they get stuck and pressure builds up. This causes a lot of earth’s terrain to form.

  15. Crust • The crust is the layer that you live on so it is the most widely studied and understood.

  16. Crust • We are using Oreos to represent the crust. • Why?

  17. Crust • The crust is made of the lightest matter and is very thin compared to the other layers.

  18. Crust • The Earth's Crust is like the skin of an apple. It is very thin in comparison to the other three layers.

  19. Temperatures & Thicknesses • The temperature, thickness, and states of matter varies between the different layers
