  1. The Paper I am Looking for • Makes an argument that that responds to the prompt, making an argument for how the document shows that the VOC was trying to set up a trade monopoly and for how the document supports the claim of Pomerantz and Topick that “Violence was a great competitive advantage when it could be used to create monopoly conditions." • Supports the argument with references (briefly quoted or paraphrased) to the Jourdain journal entry. • Introduces the paper with a brief and accurate summary of the source, answering the questions listed on in the last paragraph of the paper prompt. • Builds the argument with a thorough consideration of the evidence in the document. • Introduces and discusses evidence in such a way that it is clear how it supports the argument. • Is basically easy to read. Organizes and expresses ideas so that they are easy to discern. Sentences are constructed to communicate their meanings clearly. Includes no distracting errors of punctuation or spelling. • Cites every single piece of evidence (whether directly quoted or not) using in-text citations. Cites every idea or fact (whether diectly quoted or not) found in other materials (lecture, Pomerantz and Topik, etc.) using in-text citation.

  2. Who is writing this document? Why is he writing it? How does he present the event? What are the Dutch trying to do? What are the British trying to do in this situation? John Jourdain was an agent of the British East India Company in the early seventeenth century. In this journal, he was writing for the EIC to let them know how he was trying to use their invested money to buy spices in a place he calls Ambonia (which is today Ambon in the Maluku Islands.) In this text, Jourdain is trying to establish a factory, but he isn't having much luck. As you read, think about how the Dutch tried to keep the British from buying spices. How did the Dutch use violence? Who did they target with their violence? Why might they do that when trying to create a monopoly? How does the journal entry of John Jourdain, a representative of the British East India Company in Southeast Asia, reveal the VOC attempt at a spice trade monopoly? How does the document support Pomeranz and Topik's claim that "Violence was a great competitive advantage when it could be used to create monopoly conditions“?
