Maverick Fund Is • An Investments class • Prereq is FINA 362 • Coreq is FINA 460 • Even available to non-Finance majors who meet criteria • An opportunity to fill an elective • Even for those catalogs that do not list FINA 493 • Accepted as an elective for any area of emphasis • A great Applied Finance experience • Hands on • Flexible • The opportunity to direct the investment of about $250,000 of the University Foundation’s money

  3. To Be Clear • FINA 493 is an elective for everyone • Even if it is not listed on your catalog, you can use it as an elective • It was added to the catalog in 09-10 but is also meant to be available to students with prior catalogs • It will substituted for an elective in any area of emphasis

  6. The Maverick Fund • Current Instructor: John Hylle, Portfolio Manager for Federated Insurance • Topics: Stock Analysis, Industry Analysis, etc. • Review investment topics • Analyze industries • Analyze firms • Present recommendations to Finance Professionals

Application Needed • Will be working with the Foundation’s money • Therefore need to apply • The file is in MH 150 or linked from http://cob.mnsu.edu/finc/maverick.html • There are 23 seats listed but enrollment will be a function of the number of qualified students • Evaluation of applications is holistic - GPA(overall and in Finance), instructor feedback, personal statement, and course load

  8. If You Already Took FINA 493 • Maverick Fund is listed as 1-6 credits • You can take it twice! • 3 credits each time • The department strongly encourages continuing enrollment • The experiences will definitely build over time
