  2. Heaven • Hebrew—shamayin—”the heights” • Greek—ouranos—high or something raised up (Uranus is named from this word) • Heaven is mentioned 550 times in the Bible • 3 Heavens are spoken of in Scripture— • 1st Heaven—Atmosphere • 2nd Heaven—Planetary area • 3rd Heaven—Habitation of God • 2 Corinthians 12:2, “That I was caught up to the third heaven,”

  3. Observations about Heaven from Text • It is new in quality (1) • No Sea (2) • No tears or their source…pain, sorrow, death are gone (4) • No sin or sinners (8, 25) • Place of undefinable glory, beauty and value (9-21) • No temple (22) • No sun or moon needed as Jesus will be the light (23) • Place of glory of all the nations • Return of “Eden like” conditions with no more curse (22:1-5)

  4. Heaven is a place of… • Eternal Life(Rev. 21:4, John 3:15-16, Mt. 6:19-21) • John 3:15-16, “that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” • Matthew 6:19-21“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” • Revelation 21:4, “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

  5. Heaven is a place of… • Eternal Life(Rev. 21:4, John 3:15-16, Mt. 6:19-21) • Completion (John 14:1-6, Rev. 21:1, Romans 8:22) • John 14:1-6 1 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. • Romans 8:22“For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.”

  6. Heaven is a place of… • Eternal Life(Rev. 21:4, John 3:15-16, Mt. 6:19-21) • Completion (John 14:1-6, Rev. 21:1, Romans 8:22) • Perfection (Rev. 21:1-6, 27, Deut. 26:15, 1 Pet. 1:15, 16) • Deuteronomy 26:15 15 Look down from Your holy habitation, from heaven, and bless Your people Israel and the land which You have given us, just as You swore to our fathers, “a land flowing with milk and honey.” • 1 Peter 1:15-16 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” • 1 Thessalonians 4:17“Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.”

  9. Heaven is a place of… • Eternal Life(Rev. 21:4, John 3:15-16, Mt. 6:19-21) • Completion (John 14:1-6, Rev. 21:1, Romans 8:22) • Perfection (Rev. 21:1-6, 27, Deut. 26:15, 1 Pet. 1:15, 16) • Relationship(Rev. 21:22-22:5, John 17:2, 3; 1 Thess. 4:17) • Worship (John 4:22-24, Rev. 4:10-11; Rev. 22:9) • John 4:22-24, “You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” • Revelation 4:10-11“the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying: “You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created.”

  10. Heaven is a place of… • Bonus Point—It Is HOME!(2 Corinthians 5:1-8) • 2 Corinthians 5:1-8For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.
