  3. What does the Qur’an do? • The Qur’an teaches Muslims how to worship. • It teaches Muslims how to live good lives. • It also teaches Muslims how to treat other people.

  4. Qur’an: Written • Muhammad memorized individual revelations • He "recited" them to his followers. • They wrote them down, during his lifetime • Qur'an not compiled until640s CE • Under third Caliph, UthmanibnArran • All other versions destroyed

  5. Written in Arabic • Any translations are considered "interpretations" • Only one genre:Prophecy • Speaker is God, through angel Gabriel

  6. Contents & Arrangement • 114 Surahs (chapters) • With 3-285 Ayas(verse) each • Same heading: • "In the name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful" • All except Surah 9 • Divided into 30 Juz(blocks) • Muslims read whole Qur'an during Ramadan

  7. “People of the Book” • Ref. to members of monotheistic faiths: • Jew & Christians • Qur'an mentions many biblical characters • Inter-faith marriage: • Marrying Jews or Xns allowed for Muslim men only, not women • Muslims respect these faiths, but Qur'an is thought most accurate

  8. According to Muslims: The Torah, the Psalms, and the Gospels are “human words” not direct words of God. • The Qur’an are God’s words thus infallible

  9. Hafiz • Some special Muslims called, Hafiz, learn the verses of the Qur’an by heart so they can recite them to others. • Many Muslims do this today as a way of praising Allah. • Hafiz are highly regarded and respected. • Qur’an contest

  10. Bible and Qur’AnPassages

  11. God as the only Deity • Quran 2:255: The God! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence…” (2:165) “There are people who set up equals with God and adore them with the adoration due to God; they love them as they should love God. But those who [truly] believe are stronger in their love for God…(2:165) • Mark 12:28-30: (A teacher of the Law asked) "Which commandment is the most important of all?" Jesus replied, "The most important one is this: "Listen, Israel! The Lord our God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength."

  12. Qur’an / Biblical verses • Quran 42:5: …The angels exalt [God] with praise of their Lord and ask forgiveness for those on earth… • Revelations 7: 11: All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God. • Luke 15:10: …The angels of God rejoice over one sinner who repents.

  13. Prayer • Quran 20:14: I am God! There is no god but Me, so worship Me and perform prayer to remember Me. • Mathew 26:36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed… • Mark 1:35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.

  14. Alms • Quran 9:60: Zakat is for the poor and needy, freeing slaves, those in debt, travelers, etc. “a legal obligation from God.” • Quran 2:219: They ask what they should spend in charity. Say, "The excess (ie, what is beyond your needs)”. • 1Timothy 5:8: If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. • Luke 3:11: John answered, "The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same." • Acts 10:2: He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly.

  15. Jesus’ Miracles “Indeed I have come to you with a sign from your Lord in that I design for you from clay (that which is) like the form of a bird, then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird by God’s permission. And I cure the blind and the leper, and I give life to the dead – by God’s permission. And I inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers.” (Quran 3: 49)

  16. The main difference between Christianity and Islam Quran 4:171: “…The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of God and His word which He cast into Mary and a soul from Him. So believe in God and His messengers, and do not say “three”; desist, it is better for you. Indeed, God is but one god. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Sufficient is God as an authority…”
