  2. ‘ Data’, ‘information’ ,and ‘knowledge’ Data Data are numbers, words or images that have yet to be organized or analyzed to answer a specific question. Information Produced through processing, manipulating and organizing data to answer questions, adding to the knowledge of the receiver. Knowledge What is known by a person or persons. Involves interpreting information received, adding relevance and context to clarify the insights the information contains.

Value of Information • Information is a resource fundamental to the success of any business • As such it has monetary value (i.e. its “worth” can be measured in money terms) and it can be bought and sold • Good quality information can be used to: • Maximise sales • Cut costs • Develop new products • Help make good management decisions • Make a fortune  • Be powerful !

  4. Factors Affecting Value • The value of information depends on a number of factors. The value of information depends on it being: • Up-to-date • Complete ( incomplete could be dangerous, or harmful) • Fit for intended use (relevant)(A study of female buying habits will be largely irrelevant when targeting male customers • ) • Accurate(as much as possible) • From a reliable source • Comprehensible ( clear)
