Learning Objectives • By the end of the sessions students will: • Have a clear understanding of what Safeguarding and Staying Safe means • Identify situations where threats and dangers may exist • Be aware of how to minimise risks outside college • Know the resources and actions that can be used to keep them safe

  4. Staying Safe Ice breaker

  5. What is safeguarding? • Keeping everyone safe from harm such as illness, abuse or injury. • Promoting well-being and healthy development. • Promoting a culture where everyone is valued and their well-being is respected.

  6. Why is safeguarding important for you? • Your rights • The right to be safe • The right to feel safe • People MUST not harm or abuse you, or threaten to do this

  7. Task Threats and dangers • Divide in groups • Title your flipchart paper “Threats and dangers outside college – home, social, leisure” • You have 10 minutes to write as many of these as you can think of, in a list or spider diagram Part 1

  8. Task Threats and dangers Part 2 • You need to decide whether these issues are red, amber or green for your group. • Red – serious concern • Amber – medium concern • Green – little or no concern

  9. Presentation time • Each group must briefly present their work to the rest of the group • Fix your work to the wall when you have presented it

  10. What to do about the reds? • In groups think of 3 ways to prevent a danger or threat you identified in task 2

  11. Who do I turn to? • Any of the issues discussed today can be resolved. • You do not need to deal with them on your own – talking is the first step to solving the problem. • You can speak to your tutor, or you can speak to a Welfare Officer
