Technicalities… • Labour had 13,948,605 votes • Conservatives had 13,717,538 votes • Liberals had 730,556 votes • Why did the Conservatives win if Labour had more votes? • Labour – 295 seats, Conservatives – 321 seats, Liberals – 6 seats • In 1951 the Liberals put up 109 candidates, in 1945 they had put up 475. This left 2 million ex-liberal voters – what impact would this have on the election? • Why did they vote for Conservative?
