  2. ASCE Monuments of the Millennium • Panel of civil engineers awarded the achievements that influenced life in the 20th century. • The Skyscrapers category was represented by The Empire State Building. • July 18, 2001

History… • Its name is derived from the nickname for the state of New York. • Excavation began on January 22, 1930 and building began on March 17th . • 4000 workers and 4.5 stories per week. • Construction was part of an intense campaign by NY to have the worlds tallest building. • Officially opened on May 1, 1931,President Herbert Hoover.

  4. …history… • Building's opening coincided with the Great Depression in the United States. • On July 28, 1945, a B-25 Mitchell bomber, crashed into the north side . • It did not become profitable until 1950, 1951 sold in $51 million dollars. • In the1980 it was tried to be sold for $750 million dollars.

Architecture… • Designed by Gregory Johnson. • Rises 1250 ft to its 102nd floor, including pinnacle rises to 1453 ft. • 85 stories of comerical and office space, observation deck on 86th floor, remaining 16 stoires represent its Art Deco tower and 102nd floor observatory. • Total floor area of 2,768,591 ft sq and a base of 2 acres.

  6. …architecture… • The exterior of the building was built using Indiana limestone panels. • The total cost was $40,948,900 to build , that are equivalent to $500 million dollars of our day. • Its art deco design is typical of pre-WWII architecture in New York. • In 1964, floodlights were added to illuminate the top of the building at night. • A series of setbacks causes the building to taper with height.

  7. Reign • Tallest man made structure for 23 years before the KWTV Mast. • Tallest free-standing structure for 36 years before the Ostakino Tower. • Tallest sky-scrapper for 41 before the North Tower of the WTC. • Tallest building in NYC. • Second tallest in the US.

  8. Facts • 7 million man-hours, employing as many as 4000 men per day. • Structural Composition: 60,000 tons of steel 10 million bricks 2.5 million feet of electrical wire 6,500 windows 365,000 tons total weight 73 elevators

  9. Facts • Renovation costs over the past ten years totaled $100 million, some $59 million more than the original building cost. • Area : Approximately 2.66 acres (1.076 ha.)
