  1. Steps to Construction: Pizza Box Oven and Tire Cooker

  2. Pizza Box Oven • What materials are needed? • Recycled pizza box • Black construction paper • Aluminum foil • Clear plastic (heavy plastic laminate works best) • Non-toxic glue, tape, scissors, ruler, magic marker • Wooden dowel or straw • The pizza box solar oven can heat to 275 degrees Fahrenheit

  3. Step One: Draw a one inch border on all four sides of the top of the pizza box. Cut along three sides leaving the line along the back of the box uncut.

  4. Step Two: Form a flap by gently folding back along the uncut line to form a crease. Cut a piece of aluminum foil the size of the flap. Smooth out any wrinkles and glue into place on the part of the flap that would face down if you shut it. Tape a piece of plastic over the opening created when you cut the flap in the pizza box. Be sure the plastic becomes a tightly sealed window so that the air cannot escape from the oven interior.

  5. Step Three: Cut another piece of aluminum foil to line the bottom of the pizza box and carefully glue into place. Cover the aluminum foil with a piece of black construction paper and tape into place.

  6. Step Four: Place the food inside the pizza box on the paper, or on a thin piece of metal or aluminum foil. Close the pizza box top (window), and prop open the flap of the box with a wooden dowel, straw, or other device and face towards the sun. Adjust until the aluminum reflects the maximum sunlight through the window into the oven interior.

  7. Uses • This cooker is most useful for flat breads, cookies, rolls, or thin meats or vegetables.

  8. The Tire Cooker • What is needed? • Car tube • Wooden board • Aluminum cooking vessel • Black paint • Pane of glass or Plexiglas

  9. Step One: Take an old car tube. If the tube is punctured get it patched. Inflate the tube and place it on a wooden board.

  10. Step Two: Get an aluminum cooking vessel with a lid. Paint it black on the outside. Once it has dried, put all the ingredients for cooking in the cooking pot.

  11. Step Three: Place the cooking vessel inside the tube. Cover the tube with a pane of glass, Plexiglas, or tempered glass. Make sure the tire is slightly higher than the rim of the cooking vessel so the glass will create a good seal with the tube.

  12. Step Four: Sit back and allow the food to cook.
