  1. Noise Pollution Unwanted sound. Sound that is combined or overlapping with other sounds which creates annoyance or pain to one's ears.  Sound becomes unwanted when it either interferes with normal activities such as sleeping or conversation.

  2. Examples of noise pollution • Car Horns • Traffic • Loud music • Power drills • Lawn Mowers • Loud Human Voices • Animals • Factories • Airplanes/jets • Ventilation • Trains

  3. Words and terms to know • Decibel- unit used to measure sound. • Intensity- Power of sound • Threshold of pain-The threshold of pain is the point at which pain begins to be felt. • Threshold of hearing- When a sound starts to be heard.

  4. -A whisper is about 20 dB. -A normal conversation is typically from 60 to 70 dB -Loud thunder is approximately 110 dB, and 120 dB borders on the threshold of pain. -Loud conversations are about 90 to 100 dB.

  5. Decibel Intesity facts • When a noise is at 45 decibels, a human can not sleep. • At 120 decibels the ear is in pain. • Hearing begins to be damaged at 85 decibels. • Increased noise levels attack a person’s concentration, focus ,and accuracy at work, and reduce productivity and performance.

  6. Decibel Intesity facts • Loud noise bothers the hair cells located in your inner ear which are delicate.

  7. What is being done about noise pollution? • The government has rules and regulation around noise pollution. Whether they are followed or not is questionable. The following are guidelines from the Philadelphia noise guidelines. No person shall create or cause, or permit the creation of, sound originating from a concert venue or stadium that contributes to a total sound level, exclusive of extraneous sounds, that exceeds 70 decibels measured at the property boundary of the nearest occupied residential property. No siren shall exceed 128 decibels more than 10 feet from the source. No anti-theft or anti-intruder alarm system siren, whether for a home or a vehicle, shall sound, either continuously or intermittently, for a course of more than 15 minutes or for more than 15 minutes in a one hour period.

  8. How to personally help with noise pollution. • Roll your windows up if you listen to loud music in the car. • Use electric yard tools since they are quieter than gas-run models. • Try not to keep too many noisy things going at once. • If you’re neighbor is doing a loud activity, wait until they’re done instead of adding to the noise. • Don’t live near airports or train stations
