  4. Belief in one god • Akhenaton was first to speak of one god, Aton. • He failed by A TON. • The Israelites believed in one all-powerful, all-knowing god. • He was omnipresent- present in all places at all times

  7. Sacred Texts • Torah- First 5 Books of Hebrew Bible • Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy • 24 Books in all

  8. Story of the Israelites • Abraham- Lived near Ur in Mesopotamia • Moved to Canaan • Believed to have made a covenant with God • Covenant- Promise and agreement

  9. “Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you. And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. And I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God.”- Genesis 17:4-8

  12. Kingdom of Israel • Initially, 12 divided tribes • King David united the tribes into one kingdom • King Solomon, his son, built the city of Jerusalem and its great Temple • After his death, the kingdom split into two kingdoms: Israel in the north and Judah in the south

  13. Division • Eventually, Israel and Judah were conquered by other peoples (think back to Sumerian civilizations) and put in exile • When Cyrus the Great of Persia took power, they were many freed • Since a lot had come from Judah, they were called Jews

Diaspora • The movement or migration of a group of people, away from an established or ancestral homeland • For various reasons, the Jewish people left their homeland • Maintained identity by living in close-knit communities, keeping religious law • Believe that a return to homeland will come

  15. Modern-Day Israel • The State of Israel was established in 1948 within the state of Palestine • The UN drew up a plan to divide the land in two, one side for Israel( mostly Jewish) , the other for Palestine(mostly(but not exclusively) Muslim) • Didn’t quite go over so well….

  16. Jewish Beliefs • Torah also called “Book of Laws”-contains laws that deal with a variety of subjects • Kashrut-Laws that deal with what food can be eaten/how food is prepared • Kosher- Food is prepared according to Kashrut standards

  17. Jewish Beliefs • Other laws define criminal acts • Still others establish a moral code • Ten Commandments acted as guide • (Jewish Sabbath is Saturday)

  18. Ethical Worldview • Prophets-spiritual leaders that interpret a god’s will • Jewish prophets reminded people of their duties • Taught a strong code of ethics, or moral standards • Personal morality, social justice (rich and powerful helping poor and weak)

  20. Jewish Beliefs • Rabbi-spiritual leader of a Jewish congregation • Synagogue- Jewish house of worship • Bar (for boys) Bat (for girls) Mitzvah- Jewish rite of passage, usually around 13 years of age

  21. Jewish Beliefs • Mazeltov- literally means “good luck”, used to mean “congratulations”. (Good luck (a good thing) has occurred!)
