  2. What is Khan Academy? • Khan Academy, founded by Salman Khan, is a free web based video library and interactive dashboard designed to assist students learn academic concepts. • Khan Academy has received significant attention and funding from Google and Bill Gates, and it is recognized as revolutionizing education around the globe.

  3. How Does it Work? • Users must sign in using either a Google or Facebook account. Once signed in, it is simply a matter of typing your desired topic into the search feature, and selecting the most appropriate video tutorial. When the video is over, click on the practice link. When doing the practice questions, there is immediate feedback. If you get a wrong answer, you can then see how to solve it. Students can also do quizzes on their topic of choice and receive feedback. • Online tutorials cover a wide range of topics, including math, science, finance, history, art and more. • The site tracks student progress so students can share their progress with teachers, parents and other learning coaches. • Videos can also be embedded into teachers’ websites and blogs, giving students direct access to the concept being taught.

  4. Ideas for Using Khan Academy- Build Awareness - • If students want some extra help, beyond what is available, you could suggest that they check out Khan Academy tutorials and give them a brief overview of how to use it. Just being aware of this amazing resource might be all some students need to gain a deeper understanding of what’s being taught in class. • The url can be posted on your website, and parents can be informed as also.

  5. Ideas for Using Khan Academy- Differentiating Instruction - • Another useful way it can be used is with differentiating instruction. Struggling students can use it to practice fundamental skills, while higher level students can access more advanced outcomes. This allows students to move as their individual pace.

  6. Ideas for Using Khan Academy- Absent Students - • Often, teachers struggle with finding time to teach missed concepts to students who were absent for a lesson, or a series of lessons. Khan Academy is a way for students to get caught up to speed so they don’t feel behind the rest of the class.

  7. Ideas for Using Khan Academy- Homework Tool - • Khan Academy can also be used as a unique homework tool. Students can be assigned exercises and videos that are aligned with curriculum outcomes. Immediate feedback is provided to students, helping them know if they’re on track.

  8. Ideas for Using Khan Academy- Flipped Classroom - • Khan Academy is an excellent tool for teachers wishing to incorporate the concept of the flipped classroom into their teaching. When students access content on their own time, from home, more time can be spent focusing on active learning in the classroom. • The flipped classroom approach gives students the chance to learn at their own pace, as they can rewind videos and spend more time on the aspects that challenge them. On the other hand, if a student has already mastered the concept, they don’t have to waste time sitting through an in-class lecture on the topic. • Taking the lecture out of the classroom allows for more communication among teacher and students, freeing up time for students to ask questions, work on project based hands-on learning activities, focus on peer learning, and, in general, allowing for a constructivist exploratory approach to dominate within the classroom setting.

  9. Benefits • Khan Academy boasts: • A complete custom self-paced learning tool • A dynamic system for getting help • A custom profile to measure progress • Individual and class reports for all students • And, it’s a great way to get extra help or reinforce learning. • Check out www.khanacademy.org today!
