Daily Writing: Goals 11/11/13 Choose one prompt to respond to and explain with detail: • Obstacles are what you see when you take your eyes off the goal.” ~Unknown • What are your goals for quarter 2? Explain them in DETAIL and explain who is going to help you and how you’re going to help yourself. Planner • Type & email Best/Worst Job essay by Tuesday (or have printed by Wednesday). No late work on this! • READ!

Monday: Voices & Values • Show me: • DPTI?s thru Monsters • Vocab thru Monsters • Free read novel • Go over Night Watch (pg. 125) most commonly missed answers: • Vocab # 4 • Reading #3, #4, #6 and #7 • Go over ?s and vocab (Hope – Monsters). Quiz on the first two sections tomorrow. • Notebook title: Pictures for Vocab • Draw a picture for each word in the last two sections. • Vocab charades with all words.

Daily Writing: Homework 11/12/13 Choose one prompt to respond to and explain with detail: • What would you do if you were at home and your homework was at school? • How much time a night do you spend on homework? How much time do you think you should spend to be successful? Is there a gap? Why? Tell me why you think teachers assign homework. Planner • READ! • Type & email Best/Worst Job essay by tonight (or have printed by Wednesday). No late work on this! • Bring in your slightly used, good condition CLOTHES!

  6. Daily Writing: Vacation 11/13/13 Choose one prompt to respond to and explain with detail: • “Laughter is an instant vacation.” ~Milton Berle • My worst/best vacation was… Planner • READ! If EVERYONE can bring in a novel from our list tomorrow, we’ll have a partial reading day. • Email 2nd draft of chore/job essay by Wednesday

  7. Wednesday: Revising • Show me your essay! If you don’t have one: • Work on it during class (you will lose out on your participation points). • For ½ credit for the revision activity, find someone outside of class to revise your essay. • What is “revising” and how is it different than “editing?” • Tips: • Have a SOLID/strong thesis. • Have a solid topic sentence for each body paragraph. • EXPLAIN yourself as clearly & concisely as possible. Don’t be repetitive, and try to avoid unnecessary words, but make sure you explain each point and example (pretend your readers have NO idea).

  8. Wednesday: Revising • What’s a strong thesis? • A is B because of X, Y, & Z • What’s a good topic sentence? • First, A is B because of X. • Example of clear support? Read sample essay.

Wednesday: Revising Switch papers and peer revisers: • Put a smiley facenext to a STRONG thesis and a good hood, a frowny face next to a weak thesis or a boring/confusing hook, or a question mark in the intro paragraph if you can’t find them. • Underline each topic sentence and put a plus sign (+) if its a good one or a minus sign (-) if its weak. • Number each NEW supporting detail for each paragraph. • Put brackets [ ] around sentences that are unclear or sound “weird.” • In the margins, make suggestions for additions or ask questions (at LEAST one idea/question per body paragraph). • Write two comments on the back: one comment about what you liked about the paper, and one thing they should work on. • Sign your name. Email 2nd draft (kathleen@stepacademymn.com) using your own critical eye and peer suggestions by Wednesday. Keep marked up copy to turn in with revision!

  10. Daily Writing: Experiences 11/14/13 Choose one prompt to respond to and explain with detail: • Robert Frost write a poem titled “The Road Not Taken.” Name a road you’ve always wanted to travel. Where do you hope it takes you? What might you see on the way? • Name one thing you’ve always wanted to do, but haven’t. What has prevented you from doing it?   13. Friday: Voices & Values • Read “Thank You” as a class (pg 133). • 5 mins: Freewrite for 10 mins on 1 first impression question. • Journal title: Thank You First Impressions • In pairs, discuss your first impressions writing, and on a separate piece of paper, work on vocabulary and reading check. • Hand in your journals and your piece of paper (per pair) with vocab & reading check! • Free read!! November 25th is coming up quickly!

  14. Hot Seat • Designated “hot seat” in front of the room. 2 minutes to ask the seated person any question in a rapid-fire succession. The hot seat member is allowed to say “pass” for any too personal questions — avoid asking anything too personal, as it can ruin the fun. Sample questions: • “What would you do if you won the lottery?” • “If you could meet and have dinner with any person who ever lived, who would it be and why? What would you ask that person?” • “What three words would you use to describe yourself?” • Questions can be funny, too, such as: • “What was your most embarrassing moment?” • “What was your proudest moment?” • “What was the silliest thing you’ve ever done?”
