Ways We Work Together • We promote GBIF/IABIN with our members and are engaging through our thematic networks • Much of this is done through our members • IABIN Participación in GBIF’s Governing Board, Committees • IABIN members participate in • GBIF Demonstration Projects • Workshops and Training (including hosting) • Ebbe Nielsen prize (Dr. Goloboff – 2005) • Digitization grants • SSTN & PTN use GBIF Portal for data delivery • Each group adds IABIN specific customizations (e.g. pollinator plant relationships; species uniqueness • US operate a GBIF mirror site • Mutual tool and standards development

GBIF IABIN Survey (2007) • Identification of possible areas of collaboration in 18 theme areas • Content Development • Participation • Informatics • Priorities identified: • Development and implementation Plinian Core • Capacity building in biodiversity informatics • Promotion statement on Open Access • Data cleaning and data quality validation • Collaboration on the Invasive Species initiative • Promotion of participation of countries and organizations in • biodiversity informatics-related activities

Activities Highlights From GBIF´s Annual Report • Translated the new GBIF Portal into Spanish and expanded it to • manage and access information on species (SSTN) • Provided partial funding for the development of the species • standard – Plinian Core • developed jointly by GBIF-ES and GBIF-CR. • Collaborating in GBIF´s Pollinators Campaign through PTN • Sponsored the participation people from Nicaragua and Panama • in the Georeferencing Workshop in Argentina. • GBIF elected to IABIN´s EC (Uruguay, May 2007) • Directors of GBIF and IABIN met in Copenhagen to coordinate • activities between the two networks

IABIN Presentation At Regional Nodes Meeting • SSTN and PTN to upgrade the GBIF developed portal • to the latest source code to include the newly • developed modeling, tracking, and other features. • SSTN to Include all existing GBIF data providers in the • IABIN portal. • SSTN and the IABIN Catalog CI should notify GBIF • providers for permission to distribute exiting GBIF • registered providers through the IABIN SSTN.

Possible Joint GBIF-IABIN Actions, for Discussion • IABIN include and help data providers in the Americas • are both to GBIF members and non- members • Joint capacity building, training sessions • Technical collaboration among TNs, ITTWG, GBIF • -Maintain and synchronize unique GBIF portal • code and data services • -Common registration procedures for new data • providers in the region (Development of MOU) • -Adoption and promotion of common standards • GBIF to provide support for establishing Geoservers • for IABIN
