  2. Early Life • He was born in Denison, Texas. • The family moved to Abilene when Ike was about 2 yrs old • He graduated from Abilene High in 1909 • After high school he did not go to college. He worked for 2 years at a creamery to help pay for his big brother’s college

  3. West Point • Ike then wrote to Senator Bristow (of Kansas) for an appointment to West Point where he could attend college free. • He was accepted in 1911 and graduated in 1915. • His grades at West Point were not outstanding.

  4. Soldier • After West Point Ike went to an officer’s training school. • He buckled down and graduated number one in a class of outstanding officers • All through the 1920’s and 30’s Ike was in the Army working his way up

  5. General • After Pearl Harbor was attacked on Dec. 7, 1941 Eisenhower was on a team of officers designing plans to defeat the Japanese. • In December of ‘43, with WWII in full rage, Ike was appointed Commander of the allied forces. • He is credited with the success of D-Day and leading the Allies to victory over the Nazis.

  6. President • After success in the military Ike was “drafted” to run for President. • He did and won the elections of ‘52 and ‘56. • He is credited with starting our Interstate Highway system. • Eisenhower warned that there were too many weapons… He did not want to see a nuclear build up between nations.

  7. Death • Ike died at the age of 78 • He is buried in Abilene alongside family members • He was the 34th President from the 34th state.
