  5. Reading 4 The first female medical school student Elizabeth Blackwell was born in 1821. It was a time when women were not equal to men in many ways. Once Elizabeth visited a friend who was very ill. The friend knew she was dying. She thought women should be permitted to become doctors, “Perhaps my illness could be better understood if I was treated by a woman.” At that time, no woman was permitted to study in a medical school. Several days later, the woman died. Elizabeth began to think about the idea seriously. She wrote to many medical colleges (医学院)—Harvard, Yale and lots of others. Only Geneva Medical College (日内瓦医学院) accepted her. Elizabeth went there, but she learned that her acceptance was a joke. The teachers did not want to disappoint the teacher who had written to support (支持) Elizabeth, so they let their students decide. The male students thought it was funny that a woman would attend medical school. So, they accepted her. But the last laugh was on them. Elizabeth graduated with honors (优异成绩) from Geneva Medical College in 1849.

  7. Reading 6 A free ride Matt and his wife lived in the country. Matt was very stingy (吝啬的) and hated spending money. One day a fair (集市) came to the nearby town. “Let’s go to the fair, Matt. We haven’t been anywhere for a long time,” said his wife. “All right, but we won’t buy anything,” said Matt. They went to the fair. And in a nearby field, they saw a small airplane. “Fun flights!” the sign said, “$10 for 10 minutes.” Matt had never been in an airplane. He really wanted to have a try. However, he didn’t want to pay for his wife. “I’ve only got $10,” he told the pilot. “Can my wife come with me for free?” The pilot wasn’t selling many tickets, so he said, “I’ll make a deal (做个交易) with you. If your wife can stay quiet for the whole ride, I won’t charge (向……收费) her.” Matt agreed. The pilot took off and made his airplane do all kinds of things. At one moment it was flying upside down. When the plane landed, the pilot said, “OK. Your wife didn’t make a sound. She can have her ride free.” “Thank you,” Matt said. “It wasn’t easy for her, you know, especially after she fell out (跌出去).”

  10. Reading 9 Breakfast Which is the most important meal of the day: breakfast, lunch or dinner? Of course, the answer is breakfast. As the saying goes, we should “eat breakfast like a king”. Breakfast is important because it gives us energy to start the day and get our body running. You might think that we do not use energy when we are asleep, but this is not true. Our body uses energy to do a lot of things at night, so there is not much energy left when we get up in the morning. That is why we need to have breakfast to get energy for a new day. Having breakfast every day can help us keep fit and stay healthy. Breakfast can keep our stomach full, so we do not need other snacks in the morning. Research shows that people who eat breakfast are less likely to overeat (吃得过多) and get fat. People have different food for breakfast in different countries. A traditional Chinese breakfast includes congee (粥) and baozi. In Japan, people eat rice and miso soup (味噌汤). Western people usually eat bread and butter. Ham and fried eggs are also popular. Athletes need a lot of energy to do sports, so they usually have a big breakfast every day. A healthy breakfast for Western athletes may include milk, cheese, butter, bananas, eggs and nuts. For Chinese athletes, they may have soybean milk, salted vegetables and eggs. Do you have breakfast every morning? What do you usually have for breakfast?
