  3. What is Viacom? • The original Viacom began as CBS films, inc. in 1952 • In 1970 CBS films, inc. was “spun-off” (or split) and renamed Viacom

  4. History • 1971 • On June 4, 1971, Viacom completes the spin-off from Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc., (CBS) and establishes itself as a public company.

  5. History • 1983 • Viacom forms a joint venture with Warner Communications inc. • This meant that “Showtime” and “the movie channel” were merged creating “Showtime/The Movie Channel”.

  6. History • 1985 • Viacom obtains 66% of MTV Networks • 1986 • The rest of MTV Networks are purchased for $185,000

  7. History • 1994 • Viacom completes a $9.9 billion merger with Paramount Communications Inc.

  8. History • 2000 • Viacom completes a $39.8 billion merger with CBS Corporation

  9. History • 2001 • Acquisition of BET is completed for $3 billion

  10. History • 2005 • Viacom and CBS Corporation separate
