Healthcare Associated Infections • Healthcare associated infections (HAI) are infections occurring after exposure to healthcare, often, but not always, as a consequence of this exposure. • Includes • hospital-acquired (nosocomial) • nursing home-acquired • long-term care-associated • outpatient care-associated (e. g. dialysis, chemotherapy) • home care-associated infections

  5. Adherence to infection control guidelines is incomplete • Many HAIs are preventable with current recommendations • Failure to use proven interventions is unacceptable • Only 30%-38% of U.S. hospitals are in full compliance • Healthcare worker hand hygiene compliance hovers at just 40%
