  1. Demand Response Research CenterResearch Overview Load Management Informational and Rulemaking Proceedings March 3, 2008 Mary Ann Piette Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Roger Levy Levy Associates

  2. Presentation Outline • Automating Demand Response • Behavior • Demand Response Value • Dynamic Tariffs

  3. Automation Goals and Definition Research Goals • Cost - Develop low-cost, automation infrastructure to improve DR capability in California • Technology - Evaluate “readiness” of buildings to receive signals • Capability - Evaluate capability of control strategies for current and future buildings AutoDR Definition - Fully automated signal for end-use control • Signaling – Continuous, secure, reliable, 2-way communication with listen and acknowledge signals • Industry Standards - Open, interoperable standard control and communications to integrate with both common EMCS and other end-use devices that can receive a relay or similar signals (such XML) • Timing of Notification - Day ahead and day of signals are provided to facilitate a diverse set of end-use strategies

  4. Manual DR - Common Practice

  5. DR Automation Server and Client DRAS Clients – 1. Software only (Smart) 2. Software & Hardware (Simple)

  6. Status of Automated DR Deployment DR Programs under AutoDR CPP – Critical Peak Pricing DBP – Demand Bidding CBP – Capacity Bidding

  7. Automation by Sector Internet

  8. Common Cooling Load DR StrategiesResults from 2008 PG&E Auto-DR

  9. Next Steps – Auto-DR and Related Research • Complete final draft of Open DR Automation Server and client specification (May 2008) • Facilitate implementation of open standards in state and national DR efforts • Explore links to Building Codes (Title 24) • Ensure compliance of Global Temperature Adjustment in 2008 Building Code (Title 24) • Explore continuous energy minimization, energy management systems, and building codes

  10. Behavior Research • DR is a behaviorally driven system • Behavior research explores “why and the how” not “who and the what” • Current projects – residential and small commercial DR rates and technologies • Field tests in summer 2008
